प्रदूषण नियंत्रण के लिए वाहनों में कम्प्रेस्ड नेचुरल गैस (सीएनजी) के बढ़ते उपयोग के साथ-साथ इससे जुड़े दुष्प्रभावों को लेकर भी सवाल उठते रहे हैं। अब भारतीय शोधकर्ताओं के एक ताजा अध्ययन में सीएनजी को डीजल और पेट्रोल की तुलना में अधिक स्वच्छ एवं सुरक्षित ईंधन बताया गया है। सीएनजी, डीजल एवं पेट्रोल जैसे ईंधनों के उपयोग से वाहनों से होने वाले उत्सर्जन के विभिन्न रूपों की अनुरूपता का परीक्षण करने के बाद भारतीय प्रौद्योगिकी संस्थान (आईआईटी), कानपुर की इंजन रिसर्च लेबोरेटरी के शोधकर्ता इस नतीजे पर पहुंचे हैं। अध्ययन के दौरान अलग-अलग तरह के ईंधनों के उपयोग से होने वाले उत्सर्जन के स्वास्थ्य पर पड़ने वाले प्रभाव का पता लगाने के लिए विभिन्न इंजनों से उत्सर्जित होने वाले सूक्ष्म कणों का परीक्षण मानव कोशिकाओं पर किया गया है।.
